One reason why “The Shape of Water” is such an excellent movie is because it so properly encapsulates two indefinable yet essential elements of the human psyche: Hope and Love. Hope that something better lies beyond the horizon and Love that transcends kinship and species. Hope, always impermanent, has its moment in time and, sadly, defined by its end game (be it dashed, fulfilled, or - as it is most often - faded into oblivion). Love, on the other hand, threads its way throughout the whole narrative.
